Albie's Custom Repaint Movie TFs!(Jazz, FinalBattle Jazz, Bumblee [78 & 08]& Rachet)

Done and done with the Autobots of my Movie Repaint-job! :D
The pictures were taken at work today using a Spawn base that I repainted and using manilla cardboard files as the background (I use them to sort bills at the office ... so score! that it ended up being more useful than that!).
So! Let's get started! Chronologically after Ironhide, I did:

Rachet
I honestly was most disappointed by Rachet out of the movie figures. His paintjob left him looking like a McDonalds toy (I felt anyway) and I felt his transformation was too simple, and that the automorph gimmicks couldn't possibly save it either. SO. After Ironhide was done, I was bloody determined to fix this guy up :) Below is the result. I basically painted a lot of the details that were sculpted in but not painted. Also, I dismantled him good while painting him and got to all the nooks and crannies for this custom paint-job. :) Overall, I'm extremely pleased with the result because he doesn't look like a cheap toy that I paid 45 odd dollars for anymore! :D
(Note that with the rack on top of the alt mode, I actually repainted the red light things so it looks ... almost ruby now :) Happy with that! :D)

08 Camaro Bumblee
STL was over at my place some time ago and I'd just started with this guy then :) Pretty simple job- the usual metal-age of the black bits + bronze to bring out sculpted detail. I did a fair amount of work on the head that I'm very pleased with too :)

78 Camaro Bumblee
After the 08 Camaro was completed, there was no way I could leave this guy unpainted. I got the Japanese release with the transparent windows (and damn does the Japanese looks great compared to the Hasblo version) Again, fairly simple job- but I also added the white of the number plate as well as added silver to the rear bumper. I've yet to rewatch the movie to check if the front bumper needs any work... Also, I added gloss black to the crevices where the racing stripes go over to give it a more seamless look. :) The head was given a good workout too, and I like how the eyes turned out eventhough the sculpt was dead wrong in having bulging eyes... Oh well! :)

Final Battle Jazz
With Final Battle Jazz, I started painting him before I touched the regular Jazz. Good idea, because the Tamiya Chrome Silver I was using was at the very end of its pot, and thus VERY THICK. Also, I didn't have the foresight to thin that out with either thinner or water. So, result was very uneven, thick and splochy paint. To compound the bad-news, I didn't wait long enough for it to dry and took it home (from work during my late shift) wrapping it with bubblewrap. WORST IDEA EVER. I opened him up and he had bubblewrap marks all over the car's paintjob. So, next day I went and got me some thinner and began melting away the paint. I left some of it there as it really did give a cool trashed car feel to it :)
THEN. When all was just about said and done, I snapped the right arm. (If you look at the top-down shots of the alt mode, you'll see where there's a hole where the top of the fore arm and the bottom of the forearm are connected by the black piece of plastic) While TRUE it does add to the 'battle damage', I WASN'T TRYING TO TAKE THAT SERIOUSLY! Ah well. Still looks alright I guess :)

Finally, Jazz.
After learning all that from the Final Battle Jazz experience, I concocted a mix of Titanium Silver, Chrome Silver and thinner to make my Jazz body coat. There's a few bits I need to go over, like the back of the car where the 1st wash of it didn't quite eclipse the black of the rear, but this sucker is pretty much done and done. :) Very happy with how he turned out and he's personally, a huge success thanks to all I learnt off the Final Battle Jazz fiasco. :)

do you guys wash the figure and paint an undercoat? If so, do you use a white undercoat or do you just paint the desired colours over existing colours? How many coats do you usually paint?

Phew- Thanks a lot for the feedback guys :D I haven;t had as much of a chance to get on the boards as of late.
And why? Sims2. My partner's hooked on it and so I don't get as much computer time at home. Also, I've been trying to get together to code for the next load of shots - ie reshoots of the ones I've already painted! :D

1orion2many : Hell yeah- a lot and a lot of drybrushing. That said, the drybrushing isn't the painful bit- With the upcoming Optimus images, when you see the back (where he was plastic grey but now drybrushed silver) the PAIN was in painting the undercoat of black... that took frickin' forever. ^^;
STL : . . . I don't know how to respond to that... other than to outfit the place with laser security systems. :b

Goktimus : Thanks dude :D With mine, I don't wash the toys at all (phobia from the time when I used to play with toys in water when I was a kid and how that killed the stickers, the electronics and the pins of the figs ... DOOM!) And with Undercoats, it really depends on how I want the colour to turn out (this kind of takes experience, basically after seeing the difference a couple of times you can kind of guesstimate the difference) ; I usually go with a black undercoat (essential with the 'metal bits' that I drybrush the silver on); but with say, Jazz after the experience with Final Battle Jazz, I had a feel for how the colours would work for him, so I mixed tha tcombo of chrome silver, titanium silver and thinner and went straight onto the guy. It took a couple of washes until it got to where it is now :) It really depends on the shade you're going for that determines the number of coats. (Also depends on how thick/thin your paint is - thin is better - less brush texture lines - just takes more time as you have to go over more times to get the colour as strong)
iceburn : Thanks dude :D uhh... Customs class... I would need a good camera to get that started now wouldn't I? Dang... That said, I started by looking at Jin Saotome's stuff :) Look at : www.jinsaotomesdangeroustoys.com and look at his tutes. Great stuff there :D Am going to try out the ball joint thing that he has too shortly :) (when the shipment goes out from hlj anyway);

Longarm
As you all probably know, this is probably the 2nd I ever gave a custom paintjob :) I actually dismantled him a fair bit to get to as many areas as I could in his paintjob. Originally, I dirtied up his paintjob a little too much and then had to go into a big job of getting it less dirty. The final result, I like- it looks dirty, but not stupid-dirty :) Dinged up here and there :) A favourite part of this is how the red of his abdomen turned out- Deep shiney red :) How? It was black undercoat with chrome silver drybrush; waited for it to dry, then used black ink to darken the area before using clear red once that dried. Enjoy guys! I give you Longarm! :D

Optimus Prime
Here we go :) My original custom :) I've actually gone back and done some extra work on Optimus since he was first finished; :) Am very pleased with how he's turned out and am just thinking of adding more detail to his face. Other than that am pretty much done with him :) As I said, the black undercoat and the silver dry brushing took forever... FOREVER!!!

I really liked the custom sword sold on ebay, and managed to nab one before all of them seemed to disappear... Lucky, really- really, really lucky! :) It goes well (I reckon) with Optimus, and am bloody happy with it :D

Ironhide
This was a fig I loved from the start- loved the transformation, the look of the botmode and thought the altmode was serviceable. That said, when I heard the premiums were coming out, I thought I'd make my own and get it more accurate than even the premium would be (the premium has an autobot logo on the hood?! WHUT!?) So that's basically how it started. Then I dismantled his legs to paint it good!
I mixed up my own shade of turquoisey clear wash to dye the arm cannons the colour they are and to give a few of the areas a nice accent :) I thought the colour really came out well for that (Super fluke! Woo!)

PHEW. Well, that's it for now! :) Am in the process of painting Starscream, and he;s looking a lot like kelvinchang's atm :) Which is good- as that's kind of a benchmark for a great looking SS repaint :D

I keep suggesting to Iceburn and STL we need Repainting classes. We should make that the April meet! Buy some paint, some cheap toys and try it out.

lol we shoudl all meet at a games workshop.... they usually would let us have the paints at heavily discounted rates if were in store! plus they can also help us with outlining and drybrushing ( thats where i learnt my painting skills..)... jsut spent 20 mins with one of the guys in there before i bought some paints...

BAD shots, but custom paintjobs part two!

Stockade
Crap! Just noticed I didn't manage to take alt mode shots when I was at my parents'! Crap! There's still a little bit of touching up that needs to be done to this guy - But as you can see, I've removed most of the awful allspark blue and put in different shades of metal that mimic the colour the plastic is cast in :) I managed to paint AROUND the decepticon insignia (as I did with Starscream below) which I'm very happy about. I went for a more complete metal look - somewhat closer to regular tf's than movie tfs (though I did do the worn-metal look for a few bits. The chest was painted a beautiful glossy black before bronze details were added in (i'm seriously loving the glossblack I bought :D) Note as well that his whole head was repainted too with a shade of metal (gunmetal?) and basically, we have a very non-plasticky looking TF! :D (note there's a bit of slop I have to clean up where I've repainted his tail lights to be less flat and pastel) but other than that- There we go! :D he's seriously one of my current fave deluxes!

StarScream
I'm a bit half-half with this screamer. On the one hand, I love how it turned out, on the other, I want to do another one from scratch to see what else I can come up with. He's come off looking rather gold with lots of weathering going on. and I can't for the life of me decide what I want to go with! What I really like about this custom is that the paintjob came out really smooth. Other than the intended splots and texturing going on, everything else is smoooth :D Also, I really like the result of the black-lining I did on the guy. It brings out SO MUCH DETAIL.
