I acheived a mini-milestone lately in that I've finished collecting all the "modern helmet" classic space sets that were released. The only ones I don't have are 3 US-exclusive Unitron sets and the Futuron monorail set but these are low on my must-get list. And to celebrate, I thought I'd display them all by theme and take a few pics. To begin:

Thats bringing back some memories. All my Western, Ice Planet and Insectoids are packed away in their boxes in the cupboard. I had entertained the thought of selling them but I don't know if I could bring myself to do it, I've had them all for too long.

LEGO were obviously a little out in their estimate of how advanced we'd be in 2002 with the Ice Planet series :P

Space Police I and M:Tron = My childhood in a nutshell. Oh, the epic battles that were fought. As a child I had about a third of all of what you've got there and I could build them blindfolded. Truth, I used to play with them that much! Really nice collection dude! Are you eager for the new Space Police? :D

Impressive collection! M tron and Spyrius bring back memories. Having some of the larger kits was a dream as a kid, if I saw this back then i'd be insanely exploding.

Oh the Unitron guys are a bugger to get. I only have two of them and gave up on the trying to buy the monorail and the Base.

Thanks for the comments guys - in answer to various questions, at the moment the only ones on display are the Space Police I sets, the rest have been broken down and packed away. I usually go through various phases and display one theme at a time depending on what tickles my fancy. With SP3 coming out I thought I'd display the SP1 sets until they arrive. I'd say about 95% of these sets have been acquired in the last 12 months. Space has always been my favourite theme with Lego so I'm eagerly awaiting SP3. Although I'd wish that Lego went back to creating themes that all crossover with each other like how the Blacktrons were going up against the Futurons, SP, M:Trons and Ice Planet, Spyrius was stealing tech from the Unitrons and the Exploriens were up against the UFOs and Insectoids. The themes now all seem to be going at it alone. Mars Mission seems to be taking place in another reality to SP3 for example. But regardless, as long as its space, I'm happy. :)

Not really a big fan of the old skool helmet space sets. I do have a few but they are carry-overs from my early days of playing with Lego. I prefer the modern helmet sets much more. The themes are more consistent in the modern helmet sets whereas the older sets just seemed to be a mash up. You had sets which had a grey/yellow screens theme, then they changed to white/blue then blue/yellow, then grey/green and so on, just no consistency. Hence my like of the modern classic space sets.

Hi Fungal - yeh from a collector's perspective the colour schemes of the classic space sets are a bit messy, but I think some collectors stick to the blue and yellow scheme and re-invent the style such as seen in http://neoclassicspace.com

However as a collector who probably wants to get all the sets once he starts collecting a theme I understand your angle. :)

Oh my goodness. Lego is perhaps the most creative and educational toy ever. Transformers could only wish to have either of those two labels attached to it.

Have to disagree there. As the other guys have mentioned, it's infinitely more creative and challenging, not to mention educational. TFs ultimately are just action figures and there's only so much you can do with them. Sure your child's imagination might take off playing with TFs but the Lego gets people to challenge the boundaries of what they can do, to go outside the box. Think of Lego as not a toy brand but as a source of building blocks that allows you to build whatever you want to.

On top of that look at some of the premium Lego sets like the Taj Mahal or the Eiffel Tower. They're just downright amazing in what they are able to capture.

Everyday, I see something pretty darn amazing and inspiring. That's not to say TFs are inferior toys, they offer something else that Lego can't - complex transformations/engineering, characters and personality. But Lego really does test the boundaries of your imagination and changes you from being a pure consumer of entertainment to a creator - which is somethign I have to say I'm guilty of these days. I can blame it on work but there's a strong part of me that would like to be creating rather than simply consuming and Lego offers that avenue.

So no need to spend time finding the one with the best paint apps, you're guaranteed that any box you pick up is perfect. And if it isn't, lego doesn't hesitate AT ALL to send a direct replacement part for 100% free.

Ha ha, right. Why participate if you have no interest in it then? ;)

Anyway, it's only when you get older do you then actually appreciate lego and how awesome they are compared to hasbro. So take it for what it is instead of trying to feel insulted for some reason.

I'm not feeling insulted. I think you need to reassess my post. It simply asked you to ease off on the harshness of your response to someone who isn't well versed in Lego. Remember, this is primarily a TF site. So some people might only be getting their first glimpse at Lego since their childhood days. Even for me, it was Fungal and Stompy posting Lego acquisitions that really energised my excitement. Prior to that my memories were of childish designs with those multi-coloured brick boxes - not the City, Exo-Force, Racers, premium sets etc.

So while you and I might appreciate Lego, others might not as they haven't had the same exposure and we don't need to be so harsh on them.
