My son wants to play WFC on the PC but can't manage the keyboard.
I have a USB controller (looks like an Xbox one) that works fine on Dead Space 2 - plug it in and away it goes - but it refuses to work for WFC. The red light in the middle of the controller comes on but nothing else works.
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong/how to fix it?
I've tried Googling for an answer with no luck yet (but I have found lots of arguments about keyboard/mouse vs controller )
Any help would be appreciated.

WFC for PC does not have controller support. It can only natively be used with Keyboard and Mouse.
The WFC PC port has been hugely criticized because it lacked certain features such as the controller support, lack of graphics enhancement options (to take advantage of superior PC hardware) and lack of multiplayer chat.
However if you don't really care about multiplayer and are more comfortable with the Keyboard and Mouse (like me), then it is still pretty decent.

yeah, I've only ever played it with keyboard and mouse.

Thanks for the answers... guess my son will have to settle for watching me (and yelling "they're over there!") until he's old enough to manage the keyboard/mouse combo

hey snaketales,
you can do kb and mouse emulation to your controller.
i haven't used these, but the it shouldn't be too hard for you to figure out.

I tried it too to see how it works and it feels inaccurate but that could be my bias as I don't like the controller for shooters. It is also a fair bit of work to set up properly.
I will need to play WFC on PS3 to compare.

I have used joy2key for mapping my USB joypad to the keys.
It works, and responds fairly well for me, but I stopped using it because I found there are not enough buttons on the joypad (I have a 10 button version). :)
Although the joy2key program allows you to map one of the buttons to "flick" to another mapping scheme, and therefore in essence have many more buttons, I find this too much of a hassle, so I ended up doing the keyboard and mouse combo.
